Red Dead Redemption: 10/10

Great game play and very life like open world.  I spent more time screwing around and killing animals than the actual missions.  Ending was very good and satisfying.  I enjoyed this much more than GTA4.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare: 4/10

After all the hype and extended regular retail prices, I finally picked it up on sale for $20 at Future Shop Canada this week.  Totally did not enjoy this.  Lighting was impressive but textures were poor.  Great action but it just didn't do anything from me.  I didn't even bother with the multiplayer since all I hear is stories of 12-year old fanboys creating drama etc. etc.  Sold it to EB for $15 and might use it towards Transformers: War for Cybertron (review pending).

I'm in the middle of playing Rock Band 2. It's certainly better in terms of structure, length and achievements than the first game. Though I think the game still kind of ignores the players that want to rock out solo. However, I feel that in this game, no matter how many times I recalibrate the guitar, (and it could be the guitar going out, because I have noticed the green button not wanting to work properly at times, which sucks cause the guitar is only just over a year old), but it feels like  you just miss random notes for no reason. There are times when you can tell, "yeah I just missed that string of notes cause I played too early, or too late, or I was pushing the wrong buttons," and then you just miss one here, two there, that doesn't make any sense.

Still a great selection of music. It still feels a little like ticking off a list than a dynamic career. But still a lot of fun.

Transformers: War for Cybertron - 7.5/10

FINALLY a good Transformers game.  The last two movie tie-ins were trash.  This one actually has decent combat mechanics, story line and suitable fan service.  As a prequel to G1, it does the original series justice.  The game is also difficult at times when set on hard and the online multiplayer is done well.  Textures could have used more polish but movement and transformation is smooth.  Background and environment is bland and repetitive.  However, Cybertron itself is pretty much that so I can't completely criticize that.  Dialogue is done well, especially with Peter Cullen reprising his role as Optimus Prime.  AI is tolerable but far from smart.  Finally, the story structure is done well.  Rather than have two campaigns where they act as alternate scenarios, the campaigns complement each other with the first five chapters dedicated to the Decepticons and the last five to the Autobots.  The ending sets up G1 very well and is satisfying.

UPDATE:

Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe .... 7/10 ... I'm not done playing it, but I believe I've basically played enough that I can report (quite late I might add) on it here. It's an interesting mash up, but one that's obviously hampered by it's Teen rating. And I'm one that normally poo poos reviewing something based solely off of it's MPAA or in this case ESRB rating. But, Mortal Kombat is one of those games that is based around it's over the top violence, and it's quite obvious WB wanted to tone it down for the Teen rating, and instead of actually making a good game, Midway decided they'd pout and shit out a game. It's decent, but defintely not great. The move sets are very much copy pasted from MK characters onto the DC characters, except for when they were forced into creating new moves. But by far the biggest offender is the spotty controls. Of course neither the 360 analog or d-pad are great for fighting games, BUT ... in this case, too often the combos do not do what you want to do. You try to do Lui Kang's bicycle kick and he either kicks low or flip kicks. It gets aggravating, but if you're looking for a few quick achievement points, then it's not a bad way to pass the time.

The game gets knocked down to a 6.5 for it's terrible balancing. So, I'm basically whoring the game for gamerscore at this point, so I yank the game down to easy and one round, so I can breeze through all characters on Arcade mode. No such thing. Apparently difficulty in this game is a suggestion made by a drunk friend to another drunk friend. It's most likely to happen, but then decides not too for a few matches. Makes no sense.

Transformers: War for Cybertron - online opinion

This is the first game I've truly played online because I thought it would be enjoyable ... and it is!  Having robots transform back and forth during attack is wicked!  Escalation (similar to Horde in Gears) is a great mode although if you get stuck with novice players, you tend to only get to wave 5 or 6 of 15.  Finding online games is easy but (not sure if other games do this) you can't select which game you want to enter.  It just randomly plops you into an online match.  The customization is surprisingly shallow as far as options available.  You can pick either an Autobot or Decepticon chassis and change two-tone paint jobs with limited schemes but that's about it.  You do get perks for kill streaks and customized abilities alla Modern Warfare.

(the next few reviews are of previous PS3 games I've played but haven't written about yet)

Rock Band Track Pack: AC/DC - 6/10

Mixed feelings about this one.  It's good for any AC/DC fan since it includes all their big hits but it's based on a concert recording vs. the studio tracks.  There's no character customization and on stage representation is just a bunch of random skins vs. actual AC/DC band members.  That having said, it's extremely satisfying to rock out to Thunderstruck, Back in Black, Highway to Hell and other hallmark AC/DC tracks.  Retail for this is $20 (which is too much IMO) but EB/Gamestop Canada has it for $4.89 so can't complain with that!

Beatles Rock Band: Collector's Edition - 9/10

Amazing game!  Track selection will please/disappoint Beatles fans but most of the iconic tracks make it in.  The story mode and visuals look great.  A lot of research and work was put into this and it shows.  The ability to implement harmonics is also a nice touch although not as easy to pull off.  DLC is equally as impressive although it's too bad they won't be putting out any more.

Dead Space - 9/10

This is one scary game that keeps you on your toes!  Visuals and artistic design is eerie, creepy and unique.  These are the most badass zombies you'll ever face!  Weapons have great sound and umph to them and the death scenes are just brutal.  Game is a good length (I clocked 14 hours on my first play) and the ending scared the crap outta me.  Levels are very linear but that didn't bother me.  Ability to upgrade your weapons and armor is well implemented.  Bring on Dead Space 2!

Been busy with a few games lately

Dante's Inferno: 8/10 I really like this game. It is very derivative of the God of War series, all the way down to the health/magic chests (fountains in this game but same color and everything) I like the relic and upgrade system and the theme is interesting and well presented I think. I actually enjoyed it more at times than any of the God of War games.

Transformers: WFC oh yeah/10: The definitive Transformers game. Loved every second of it, and there is a ton of G1 fan service. The only complaint here is that sometimes it feels repetitive and I would have liked some of the sound effects/voices to be closer to the old series but otherwise awesomeness, much like Batman Arkham Asylum, finally a game that does a franchise proud.

Tropico 3: 8/10 Like Sim City: Carribean Edition sort of. I haven't played a sim like this in a long time but I really love this game, alot of replayability and it is addictive as hell. Lots of juggling resource development with housing/military/etc. and you have several factions that you must keep at least remotely happy otherwise you get overthrown/lose the election. The only faults are the game is somewhat buggy at times with slowdown and occasional freezing. Some may find it difficult to adjust to console controls if you're used to playing sims on a PC, I didn't really have a problem with the menu interface since its not really as fast paced as say Command and Conquer games are.
